New Mom Tanvi’s 10 Must-Haves to Combat Every Baby Emergency!
As a first-time parent, borderline hypochondriac and another person navigating the ‘new normal’ of COVID, raising a baby just got a little more challenging than it already was! And with experience (albeit, a total of just 10 weeks), a lot of research, and a million calls to pediatricians, here are some of the products I find will solve most of your baby worries!
So if you’re planning to deliver soon, make sure you add them to your shopping list!
#1. The Hand Pillow
They say you never wake up a sleeping baby, but what about putting the baby to sleep in the first place? My little one would crave the comfort of having someone always be around when she was sleeping, which became impossible to manage after a point! This hand pillow was the ultimate discovery to navigate the problem. It might sound a bit creepy but being the same size and weight as a human hand meant I could just leave this on my baby’s tummy and she would doze off to sleep in no time! Ultimate lifesaver….
#2. Philips Avent Pacifier
Yes, yes, I can already hear the judgment. We all want our babies to be pacifier free and I’m no different from the rest of you. However, this product is an excellent emergency device to have at hand. I had to travel frequently with my little one and sometimes when nothing else works with a howling baby, this product is pure magic. You can use it as sparingly as you like but keep it handy for the really bad days!
#3. The Hing Bib
Babies go hand in hand with stomach issues and if you, like me, are not a big fan of pumping them with medicines, this bib is a great buy. Made with hing and other therapeutic herbs, all you have to do is heat the bib in the microwave and make your baby wear it. The aromas give instant relief to your little one.
#4. The Medela Calma Nipple
If you plan to keep your baby on exclusive breast milk but have a busy schedule, pumping is the ultimate solution for you. However, with little babies, nipple confusion can be a very real problem. So if your plan is to express milk and feed from the bottle at night or when you’re out, this nipple is the one to go for. Designed to offer the same resistance as the breast, using this will make sure your child does not stop breastfeeding and develop a preference for the bottle.
#5. The Reflux Pillow
Again, a common problem among babies that can be helped with this very simple product! The reflux pillow keeps the baby’s head elevated, ensuring that the milk settles and the spit-ups reduce. Keep this in handy for the days when your bub can’t seem to keep anything in.
#6. Alcohol swabs
This may seem like a really weird one to have on the list, but trust me, it makes sanitizing and cleaning so so simple. From your thermometers to the baby’s umbilical cord wound, it works like magic on everything. Keep a box handy for instant sterilization.
#7. Diaper disposal bag capsule
Smelly diapers are NOT fun at any point in time, but you really don’t want to leave them around friends’ homes or wherever you take your baby. This capsule attaches itself to your diaper bag and has scented disposal bags in which you can throw used diapers. Trust me, your friends and family will appreciate this more than you know!
#8. The MI 360 Camera
Move over baby monitors, this camera is easy to use, cost-effective and so convenient. The MI camera has 2-way audio, connects to your phone, and is fully portable—meaning you can carry it with you and plug it anywhere you like. So whether it’s someone’s home, a hotel if you’re traveling, or even work, you can have your eyes on your baby at all times.
#9. White Noise Machine
Making your baby sleep is akin to climbing Everest and I highly recommend investing in every tool possible to help make the sleep journey smoother. A white noise machine proved highly effective in putting my little one to sleep and it’s a great investment for your nursery. Get one with a night light and you’ve got yourself a winner.
#10. A brilliant bouncer
Yes, this is one category of product that you genuinely need to invest in. Get yourself a really solid bouncer/rocker as it works wonders in calming down a fussy baby and keeps them entertained. I use the Mastela which has multiple musical and movement settings but get one that works for your budget and style.
